  • Overview

    Afton Chemical Corporation develops and manufactures petroleum additives that help fuels burn cleaner and more efficiently, engines run smoother, and machines last longer. Afton is seeking a process design specialist engineer for our manufacturing facility in Sauget, Illinois located near Saint Louis, Missouri. Candidate must work effectively in a manufacturing environment within a team. Creative problem solving and troubleshooting skills as well as excellent communication skills are required.

    Responsibilities

    • Provide conceptual input to projects during the planning stages
    • Establishes design criteria for assigned project requiring the application of basic engineering principles, Afton Chemical standards, material properties, and familiarity with construction, installation, and maintenance procedures
    • Prepares detail and layout drawings and sketches requiring the application of theoretical and practical engineering knowledge
    • Design layout of piping, equipment, instrumentation in 3D model and generation of isometrics for small projects using P&ID’s developed by Process Engineering
    • Reviews vendor prints for conformance with contract specifications
    • Supports field work duties as required by project and routinely leads the field checkout work as required
    • Regularly interfaces with other departments, vendors, and project engineers in order to support project needs
    • Routinely performs other related tasks in support of Mechanical Engineer, such as writing procedures and specifications, analyzing bids, compiling, computing, estimating, etc
    • Recommend repairs or adjustments to piping system per requests from Maintenance
    • Conduct design studies as needed, including written reports and recommendations
    • Confer with engineers, production, and others as needed to discuss existing or potential engineering projects or equipment troubleshooting
    • Design and improve mechanical & piping systems and facilities to improve safety, maintenance or general accessibility
    • Operate computer aided design (CAD) software to perform design and documentation
    • Provide technical capabilities to support capital projects and ongoing maintenance and operations activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes, and customer requirements
    • Inspect completed installations and observe operations, to ensure conformance to design and compliance with operational and safety standards
    • Assist Mechanical Engineer in developing and improving new and existing engineering design standard and procedures
    • Assist Mechanical Engineer in preparation of equipment, piping, & other mechanical specifications for purchase of materials and equipment
    • Ensure all project designs are completed on time, within budget, safely, and satisfactory to operations
    • Assist Mechanical Engineer in developing capital project programs for new equipment and major repairs
    • Support estimator in developing budgets, estimating labor, material, and constructions costs

    Qualifications

    • Associates Degree in Drafting or Industrial Design
    • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
    • Minimum of 5 years in plant or engineering environment (Piping Design)
    • Demonstrates the ability to interface effectively with all levels of staff in a variety of functions
    • Demonstrate a sound understanding of design concepts with minimal input from Engineer
    • Able to handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently and work independently
    • Excellent communication skills
    • Proficient in AutoCAD and AutoCAD Plant3D or other plant design software
    • Proficient in Navisworks software
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with other design software applications
    • Familiarity of ASME/API codes
    • Familiarity with NDE methods and Mechanical Integrity Programs
