  • Overview

    Afton Chemical Corporation develops and manufactures petroleum additives that help fuels burn cleaner and more efficiently, engines run smoother, and machines last longer. Afton is seeking a process design specialist engineer for our manufacturing facility in Sauget, Illinois located near Saint Louis, Missouri. Candidate must work effectively in a manufacturing environment within a team. Creative problem solving and troubleshooting skills as well as excellent communication skills are required.



    • Provide conceptual input to projects during the planning stages
    • Support estimator in developing budgets, estimating labor, material, and constructions costs
    • Produce basic design engineering, IFA, and IFC packages
    • Ensure instrumentation design work is performed in accordance with technical standards, methods, procedures, and practices
    • Provide electrical design (FEL and detail) for small to medium sized maintenance and capital projects
    • Provide technical assistance commissioning and startup of capital projects
    • Establishes design criteria for assigned project requiring the application of basic engineering principles, Afton Chemical standards, material properties, and familiarity with construction, installation, and maintenance procedures
    • Reviews vendor prints, specifications and drawings for conformance with contract specifications
    • Supports field work duties as required by project and routinely leads the field checkout work as required
    • Regularly interfaces with other departments, vendors, and project engineers in order to support project needs
    • Routinely performs other related tasks in support of Electrical Engineer, such as writing procedures and specifications, analyzing bids, compiling, computing, estimating, etc
    • Recommend repairs or adjustments to Electrical or Instrumentation systems per requests from Maintenance
    • Conduct design studies as needed, including written reports and recommendations
    • Collaborate with operations, maintenance, construction personnel, and vendors to provided technical assistance, support, and guidance in solving problems and implementing improvements, at the site and linked sites
    • Design and improve Electrical and Instrumentation systems to improve safety, reliability or general operations
    • Provide technical capabilities to support capital projects and ongoing maintenance and operations activities to ensure compliance with specifications, codes, and customer requirements
    • Inspect completed installations and observe operations, to ensure conformance to design and compliance with operational and safety standards
    • Develop and improve new and existing engineering design standards and procedures
    • Prepare equipment, instrumentation, and other electrical specifications for purchase of materials and equipment
    • Ensure all project designs are completed on time, within budget, safely, and satisfactory to operations
    • Provide technical assistance commissioning and startup of capital projects



    • Associates Degree in Electrical or Instrumentation Design (two year college or university)
    • Minimum of 10 years of relevant experience
    • Minimum of 5 years in plant or engineering environment (Electrical & Instrumentation Design)
    • Demonstrates the ability to interface effectively with all levels of staff in a variety of functions
    • Demonstrate a sound understanding of design concepts with minimal input from Engineer
    • Able to handle multiple tasks and projects concurrently and work independently
    • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and familiarity with other design software applications
    • Good working knowledge of National Electrical Codes
    • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
