Sr. R&D Scientist - Performance Fuel Additives (PFA)

Research and Development


Conduct research and product development for the Performance Fuel Additives SBU. Scope, develop, lead, and execute projects ranging from customer-specific additive packages to industry advocacy to mechanistic understanding of additive performance. Integrate information from customers, CTS, legal, business, and marketing to execute technical work according to defined project goals and timelines. Foster appropriate design of experiments and statistical approaches to research, drive improvements in information management, develop intellectual property, and monitor competitive products.   


  1. As a technical lead, drive consensus on development approach, including timelines, technical targets, Gantt charts, and budgets, work to resolve resource conflicts, meet timing and budget milestones within agreed targets. Identify and champion opportunities to improve communication and alignment across functions.  
  2. Develop fundamental understanding of additive and package performance through designed experiments, evaluation, organization, and interpretation of data.  
  3. Communicates project status, findings, progress reports. Identifies, communicates, and mitigates risks. 
  4. Generate IP and provide a technical assessment of Afton versus competitor IP. Ensure objectivity and accuracy in reporting and recording data. May direct/supervise the activities of other team members as appropriate.  
  5. Represent Afton in technical conferences, societies and other industry activities. Maintain adequate level of technical expertise and self-development through study, seminars, etc. Stay informed of advanced developments inside and outside of Afton. 
  6. Lead technical conversations with customers as required, driving insight into customer needs and expectations.  
  7. Complete special assignments and participate in project teams as required for business needs and for personal development.



  • S. in Chemistry
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of applicable chemistry and/or engineering principles and application in a research and development environment typically acquired after 5-10 years of relevant experience. Track record of innovative approaches to problems.



  • Advanced degree in Chemistry or Engineering
  • Experience directly related to fuels, fuel additives, and/or engine testing.

  • Project Management - Effective execution of modest projects, where the accountability for delivery is owned, and necessitates the coordination of several work streams and support from other contributors Understands the principles of project management and uses basic tools (Gannt Charts, etc) to facilitate the process. Adheres to requirements of APDP
