Compensation Specialist

NewMarket Corporation is the parent company of Afton Chemical Corporation and Ethyl Corporation. Afton Chemical is one of the largest global suppliers of lubricant additives and offers a broad line of fuel additives worldwide. 


Administer broad-based US compensation programs including basic compensation and annual compensation planning. Monitor the programs and make recommendations for changes as appropriate to align with the global compensation philosophy. Job Architecture and job description management.  Also responsible for general ledger activities including reconciliation, payroll posting and transaction preparation.


  • Participate in surveys to determine appropriate compensation levels. Consult with management to ensure compensation equity laterally and vertically across the organization.
  • Use appropriate comparative data to determine the appropriate level of all non-executive positions. Monitor data and initiate changes as necessary to maintain consistency and equity in the compensation system.
  • Establish starting salaries. Monitor annual salary increases for anomalies and consult with appropriate HR representative or manager to determine resolution.
  • Post payroll entries to the general ledger and reconcile general ledger on a monthly basis. Ensure all required transaction and documentation is completed on time and accurately.
  • Manage and ensure the integrity of the organizations Job Architecture and job title structure.
  • Assist managers in developing job descriptions to accurately describe the work to be done. Ensure that descriptions are entered into the job description database.
  • Ensure compliance with applicable Wage and Hour laws and proper job classification.
  • Conduct annual competitive assessment and salary structure review
  • Research and compile the data necessary to recommend the merit increase budget for the year. Prepare annual salary forecast.  Ensure timely and accurate distribution of information and data to appropriate/responsible parties.
  • Secure approvals and communicate changes for non-forecasted increases on a monthly basis. Complete quarterly salary reviews to communicate planned increases for the upcoming quarter.   
  • Provide support in other areas of HR as needed (e.g. special projects and vacation coverage)



  • Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Business Administration or related field
  • Demonstrated advanced knowledge and understanding of applicable wage and hour laws and compensation policies and procedures typically obtained by working in similar roles of increasing responsibility for more than 8 years.
  • Basic accounting knowledge



  • Advanced degree in Business, Human Resources, or related field
  • Advanced Excel skills
  • Experience with HRIS system reporting (Ultimate software)
  • Experience with SAP
  • CCP, GRP or equivalent certification



  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles and concepts of determining the relative value of the job and the appropriate compensation
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze and disseminate significant amounts of information while maintaining attention to detail and accuracy
  • Effective oral and written communication skills

  • Able to take complex data and translate it into a usable and understandable format
  • Demonstrate the ability to understand job content and apply the knowledge in creating meaningful job descriptions

  • Able to work with minimum supervision in handling routine tasks and takes initiative as appropriate
  • Able to demonstrate computer literacy with regard to NewMarket's routine applications
  • Must maintain confidentiality of data
