Sr. R&D Chemist - Analytical

Research and Development


Provides technical leadership in GC/MS qualitative analysis, headspace analysis, SPME and other GC techniques.  Will also provide LC/MS qualitative and quantitative analysis.   Performs assigned projects under the supervision of a senior R&D team member or manager, and may conduct independent studies, manage projects, and work on large/complex projects. 


  1. Be an analytical GC/MS expert especially in structural elucidation. Develop GC headspace, SPME and other GC methods. 
  1. Provide LC/MS qualitative and quantitative analysis. 
  1. Participates in technical and/or project reviews and presents findings as appropriate. Engages with assigned teams and cross-functional stakeholders, such as process, plants, EHS, mechanical and R&D strategic business units (SBU). 
  1. Keep up to date in current relevant technology. Teach and mentor others in mass spec and GC techniques. 
  1. Maintain accurate written documentation in accordance with established procedures. Ensure objectivity and accuracy in reporting and recording data. May direct/supervise the activities of other team members as appropriate.    
  1. Understand, comply, and promote safe laboratory and work practices, including appropriate safety regulations and procedures. 
  1. Assure that complete documentation is maintained on ISO or Quality System related activities. Participate in Quality System related activities and maintain an up-to-date understanding of the Quality System functions & responsibilities. 
  1. Represent Afton in technical conferences, societies and other industry activities. Maintain adequate level of technical expertise and self-development through study, seminars, etc.  Stay informed of advanced developments inside and outside of Afton.



  • Bachelor’s in Chemistry
  • Thorough knowledge and application of mass spec qualitative analysis and chromatography techniques in a research and development environment typically acquired after at least 5 years of relevant experience.



  • Advanced degree in Chemistry
  • Strong GC/MS and GC skills



  • Mass Spec-Experience with mass spec is a must. Qualitative analysis and the use of mass spec for structural elucidation is a must.
  • Instruments-Experience with GC/MS and/or LC/MS is a must.
  • Laboratory-Perform hands on sample preparation and operation of instruments.
  • Technology- Familiar with the latest MS and GC equipment for industry
