Senior R&D Chemist

Afton Chemical Ltd, a major independent supplier of lubricant and fuel additives to the oil industry and part of the worldwide NewMarket Corporation, are seeking an experienced formulator to join our Industrial team at our EMEAI headquarters in Bracknell, Berkshire. 

As the ideal candidate you will likely have a PhD in chemistry, with a strong technical background and a fundamental understanding of the delivery of previous projects. Whilst being driven and adept at taking ownership of assigned projects, you will also be comfortable working with and sharing information with the broader team, both on your own projects and on aspects of larger global projects. You will also be a strong communicator with the ability to explain complex technical information in a clear and structured manner to various stakeholders across the business.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities include:

  • Performs formulation synthesis and/or testing activities to meet established project objectives.
  • Evaluation and preliminary interpretation of data. Provide technical recommendations to senior R&D team members or management regarding results, chemistry/component viability and necessary characterizations. Completes special projects as assigned. 
  • Participates in technical and/or project reviews and presents findings as appropriate. Engages with assigned teams and cross-functional stakeholders, such as sales, process, marketing, etc. 
  • Maintain accurate, up-to-date lab notebooks and ensure objectivity and accuracy in reporting and recording data.
  • Understand, comply, and promote safe laboratory and work practices, including appropriate safety regulations and procedures. 
  • Represent Afton in technical conferences, societies, and other industry activities.

Qualifications

Education and experience:

  • PhD in Chemistry or equivalent combination of experience and education.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of chemistry and its application in a research and development environment.
