EHS Manager

Health, Safety and Environment


Develop, implement, lead and monitor activities related to Safety, Environmental issues, and regulatory affairs to ensure the health and safety of personnel, and compliance with national, state and local laws. Typically manages a team of 3 - 5 employees. 


  • Active member of the plant leadership team driving accountability for plant safety initiatives and performance reporting to the plant manager. Work directly with corporate HSSE professionals to learn or share best practices throughout the Afton organization, and implement appropriate programs. 
  • Cultivate an inclusive culture focused on continuous improvement in safety performance and personal accountability for safety. Lead and develop the safety department to advocate for all employees to promote engagement and active participation in safety programs. 
  • Formulate, write, and implement Afton Sauget environmental, safety, health, and regulatory compliance programs. Develop and implement audit processes and procedures to measure compliance, but also continuous improvement at the site to mitigate or eliminate risk in accordance with site or corporate focus initiatives.
  • Research, accumulate, and obtain information and statistical data needed to develop reports which substantiate Afton’s compliance with regulations in accordance with local, state, and federal requirements. Maintain detailed records on Afton’s operational activities with regard to safety and environmental issues, concerns, and risk mitigation.
  • Meet and consult with local, state, and federal authorities on regulatory matters to ensure that Afton operates in compliance with the appropriate air, water, and hazardous waste permits.
  • Instruct Afton personnel regarding local, state, and federal regulations governing environmental, safety, and regulatory issues. Consult with personnel regarding Safety & Regulatory requirements that may apply to proposed projects and/or activities.
  • Ensure adequate and appropriate safety, environmental, and regulatory training for personnel. Develop training programs, secure outside training as necessary, select/recommend sources for training aids and materials as needed. Oversee new employee safety orientations and conduct selected educational safety programs as required.
  • Direct the implementation, maintenance and improvement of the EHS management systems as appropriate for the location and responsibilities of the position. 
  • Training & personnel/career development and interview/selection of new personnel.
  • Develop and control annual budget for assigned area and effectively allocate funds and manpower accordingly.


  • BS degree in Chemistry, Engineering, or related science10+ years relevant work experience in HSSE roles
  • 10+ years’ experience in an industrial place or chemical industry environment

NOTE: For Afton employees, an appropriate combination of experiences that will support the required skill base may replace one or more of the specific experience requirements above.



  • MS degree
  • Certified Safety Professional
