Procurement Representative

Afton Chemical Corporation is part of the NewMarket Corporation (NYSE: NEU) family of companies, and is one of the largest global suppliers of lubricant additives and offers a broad line of fuel additives worldwide. 


Responsible for ensuring uninterrupted, cost effective supply of a portfolio of raw materials that support Afton business goals and operations, including production, contract manufacturing, resale operations, R&D and corporate departments. The role is typically responsible for less than $50MM in annual spend. The role comprises of 75% tactical and 25% strategic procurement activities. This is the entry level for direct purchasing responsibility and will typically work under supervision.


  • Assures and maintains the functionality and integrity of the procurement data management and operating systems (SAP, VNCS, ETQ, GRMS, etc.).
  • Supports buyers as needed on specifications, purchase orders, contracts, price changes, supply/delivery situations, price discrepancies and sample requests and coordination for trials.
  • Uses SAP effectively to create agreements, price change notices and to investigate supplier/customer concerns for buyer closure.
  • Identifies, researches, resolves and corrects SAP documentation discrepancies (i.e. scheduling agreements, contracts, purchase orders, supplier price mismatches, etc.).
  • Serves as the focal point for data collection and report integration for direct procurement. Ensures consistency in information reporting and format.
  • Develops and improves mutually beneficial relationship with suppliers to resolve delivery, quality, price, and other concerns.
  • Tracks supplier performance as required and assist quality control in the initiation and/or resolution of Supplier Corrective Action issues.
  • Develops and maintains department websites, files, databases. 
  • Assists Accounts Payable with invoicing price discrepancies, research, and resolution.
  • Key contact with EHS for various data collection, such as SDS and Product Stewardship. 
  • Responsible for vendor screening for potential suppliers and rescreening for obsolete vendors. 
  • Develops and manages supplier relationships to negotiate and maintain price and supply conditions. Maintains supplier pricing forecasts. 
  • Prepares, maintains, and communicates long term sourcing strategies for assigned materials. 



  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Business, Economics, Math, Chemistry or related field.
  • Demonstrated effective communication, negotiation and organizational skills typically acquired through 3 or more years of relevant or related experience.


  • Purchasing or directly relevant sales experience.
  • Work experience in the petroleum additive, lubricant or chemical industry.
  • Certified Professional in Supply Management (CPSM) or similar certification (e.g. CIPS).

For NewMarket, Afton or Ethyl employees, an appropriate combination of experiences that will support the required skill base may replace one or more of the specific experience requirements above.

  • Broad knowledge of the principles of contract writing and management.
  • Demonstrated computer literacy with regard to Afton's routine applications. 
  • Team-oriented leadership dedicated to continuous improvement, maximizing productivity and effectiveness in the organization, and promoting best practices. 
  • Effective listening skills.
