Overview

An exciting new opportunity to gain valuable R&D experience at our Bracknell site, with direct line into the US. Undertaking essential research into the science that underpins our products, you will use engineering knowledge and the fundamentals of petroleum additive performance to develop new tribology tests that will support product development.

We are actively seeking someone with a solid academic foundation, who is application-focused in their work and able to look beyond the immediate science into what that means for the product and wider business.

Responsibilities

  1. Design approach, test plans, and milestones through to project completion.
  2. Evaluate and interpret data, performance, and deliverables. Provide recommendations to R&D and project leaders regarding results, deliverables, progress, and challenges. Identify and eliminate hurdles to successful project completion.
  3. Complete complex bench and rig testing plans, in-depth engineering analysis and interpretation, and provide a detailed and accurate test report to the customer in a timely manner. Evaluate all test/project data to ensure accuracy, completeness, and reasonability of conclusions.
  4. Complete collation of data, final interpretation, and written test reports. Consult with the customer as necessary to review, present and explain results, offer insight and analytical perspective, and ensure that project goals are being met. 
  5. Engage with assigned teams and cross-functional stakeholders, to assist in determining future direction.
  6. Lead or direct special research projects independently. Oversee technical activities and/or supervise technical team members assigned to the project.  
  7. Monitor developments in internal and external technologies and related business opportunities, recommending new R&D initiatives/directions to management. 
  8. Represent Afton at industry events and activities, and leverage opportunities with external institutions.
  9. Understand, comply, and promote safe laboratory and work practices, in line with regulations and procedures. 
  10. Maintain adequate level of technical expertise and self-development through study, seminars, etc. Stay informed of advanced developments inside and outside of Afton.
  11. Participate in IP activities as required, including competitor reviews, freedom to practice assessments, patent filings, invention disclosures, etc.

Qualifications

PhD (preferred) or Master’s degree in Chemistry, or Chemical or Mechanical Engineering (or other relevant science field).

Thorough knowledge and understanding of chemistry and/or engineering principles and application in a research and development environment, demonstrated through relevant experience.

Demonstrated ability to handle multiple priorities and stakeholders.

Excellent administrative and organizational competencies.

Excellent analytical and communication skills.
