SUMMARY:

This position is for a technical leader in GC/MS qualitative analysis, headspace analysis, and other GC techniques. The applicant would also provide LC/MS qualitative and quantitative analysis support. The role includes assigned projects under the supervision of a senior R&D team member or manager as well as independent studies, managing analytical projects, and contributing to large/complex projects with other team members.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

  1. Serve as GC/MS expert in structural elucidation and qualitative analysis
  1. Method development for standard GC and GC-headspace experiments
  1. Provide qualitative and quantitative LC/MS support
  1. Teach and mentor others in mass spec and GC techniques
  1. Participate in technical project reviews and present findings as appropriate
  1. Engage with assigned teams and cross-functional stakeholders, such as process development, plants, EHS, mechanical and R&D strategic business units (SBU)
  1. Keep up to date in current relevant technology related to analytical techniques and petroleum additive and lubricant technology
  1. Maintain accurate written documentation in accordance with established procedures and ensure objectivity and accuracy in reporting and recording data
  1. Understand, comply, and promote safe laboratory and work practices, including appropriate safety regulations and procedures
  1. Participate in Afton Quality Management system including maintenance of documentation related to appropriate ISO standards
  1. Represent Afton as needed in technical conferences, societies, and other industry activities

Qualifications

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE MINIMUMS:        

  • Bachelors in Chemistry
  • Thorough knowledge and application of mass spec qualitative analysis and chromatography techniques in a research and development environment typically acquired after at least 5 years of relevant experience with PhD or 15 years with BS.

 

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE PREFERRED:

  • Advanced degree in Chemistry
  • Strong GC/MS and GC skills

SKILLS/ABILITIES:

  • Safety- Work safely in a laboratory environment according to industry and Afton standards
  • Mass Spec- Experience with mass spec is a must specifically including qualitative analysis and the use of mass spec for structural elucidation through spectral analysis and database searching
  • Instruments- Experience with GC/MS and/or LC/MS instrumentation is a must
  • Laboratory- Hands on sample preparation and operation of analytical instrumentation
  • Technology- Familiar with the latest MS and GC equipment for industry
  • Decision Making - Decision making in a timely manner based upon a mixture of analyses, experience, and potentially incomplete information, under tight deadlines and pressure
  • Analysis and Problem Solving – Ability to solve difficult problems with effective solutions utilizing appropriate tools and asking good questions
  • Communication - Ability to communicate information clearly and effectively in an engaging and convincing manner verbally, through writing, and other forms
