Overview

Senior EHS Specialist will be responsible for managing aspects of site EHS programs - including assisting with Air Compliance, and to some extent other areas (as needed)- identifying, implementing EHS programs, improving compliance tools and strengthening overall site performance.  Position works to ensure compliance with US EPA, IEPA and local regulations.

Responsibilities

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create and implement environmental and regulatory compliance programs that meet applicable requirements. (Clean Air Act, Title V, NESHAP, HON, MON, MACT, PSD, LDAR…etc.)
  • Ensure robust processes, procedures and work instructions are in place that ensure compliance.
  • Ensure systems and records are in place to demonstrate compliance with environmental requirements.
  • Work to proactively to identify and control compliance risk, head off EHS issues and concerns.
  • Interface with local, state, and federal authorities on regulatory matters as needed to ensure that Afton meets all compliance obligations.
  • Produce accurate emissions estimates and reporting; use metrics to drive continuous improvement and enable site to avoid non-compliance. Quantify impacts and deliver on opportunities to drive efficiency and reduce footprint.
  • Provide EHS support for proposed projects, at the site level or for new activities to identify and mitigate risks, reduce impact in keeping with Design with EHS in Mind.
  • Assist with site compliance permitting. Ensure permit requirements are well understood and that systems are in place to deliver the requirements.
  • Monitor regulatory trends, emerging issues, new proposed regulations
  • Leverage Third-Party Service providers as needed to cost effectively assist and deliver compliance. (ie. Stack testing, permitting, monitoring, etc.)
  • Provide support to plant outside of normal business hours– as needed.

Qualifications

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE MINIMUMS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related field.
  • 7-10 years relevant work experience in manufacturing, consulting, or equivalent. Work experience may include combination of experience such as permitting, compliance, site support, field work, including private sector and/or government agency.
  • Experience working with regulatory agencies, internal stakeholders, to resolve compliance/permitting issues.
  • Demonstrated effective program and project management, strategic thinking, problem solving and leadership skills.
  • Experience in chemical, refining, manufacturing, or similar environment – or consulting support to these industries.

 

SKILLS / ABILITIES:

  • EHS Risk Assessment: Practices compliance risk identification and assessment. Proactively identifies potential compliance challenges to ensure that requirements and vulnerabilities are identified.  Helps others understand potential compliance risks to develop strategies to achieve VoZ. Assesses risks and proposes corrective actions. Effectively communicates risk and control options to plant leadership and EHS team. 
  • EHS Risk Control: Recommends and selects appropriate compliance assurance strategies.   Creates processes, procedures and systems to deliver compliance. Works to prevent, eliminate, reduce, mitigate non-compliance. Escalates unacceptable conditions, inadequate controls or potential areas of non-compliance. Skilled at auditing for compliance.
  • EHS Compliance & Conformance: Compiles, analyzes, interprets data with respect to requirements. Translates requirements for shared ownership and accountability.  Assists with Incident investigation to prevent non-compliance/non-conformance. Leverages knowledge and experience to clarify requirements. Ensures compliance gaps and non-conformances are worked to completion.  Manages systems that deliver robust compliance. Identifies, analyzes, communicates challenges to compliance (external regulatory requirements) and conformance (internal requirements).
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Builds strong relationships with Stakeholders. Gains support for EHS initiatives and compliance. Helps train and promote shared accountability for compliance.
  • Decision Making: Makes decisions in a methodical, logical and calculated way. Clearly defines a problem before evaluating solutions. Uses available information and experience to make good calls. Uses data to clarify situations. Leads discussions and decisions that drive project outcomes.
  • Analysis and Problem Solving: Uses strong problem solving and incident investigation skills. Analyzes all aspects and recommends effective solutions; Analyzes data for trends, common causes and uses data to develop strategies and corrective actions.
  • Communication: Communicates effectively at all levels of the organization through multiple ways. Adapts style and approach based on need. Builds and delivers clear and compelling messages. Has a proven track record of effective communication. Understands key stakeholders, relates well. Skilled at developing and delivering presentations. Verifies alignment of messaging and desired outcomes.
  • Performance Bias: Self-starter who can be trusted to take the lead on important projects. Requires little supervision. Tackles problems with sense of urgency. Identified hurdles and moves quickly to resolve.
  • Project Management: Effectively executes projects, demonstrates accountability for delivery, coordinates several work streams and seeks needed support from other contributors. Communicates status, escalates project slippage, risks to budget and timeline.
